Abstract
Color is a critical parameter in assessing the quality of sugar. As the sugar manufacturing process progresses, buildup of color compounds occurs. By this virtue, an early removal of color compounds in intermediate product such as clarified juice may be considered to lessen this color buildup. The clarified juice, with an initial color of 17,179.21 IU, was evaluated using brix correlation and absorbance reading at 900nm. On the other hand, activated carbon derived from bagasse was used as an adsorbent in the adsorption process. Moreover, the carbonization and activation of bagasse was said to be efficient upon obtaining a fixed carbon content of 78.8% (w/w) after proximate analysis. The parameters include adsorbent dosage, pH and contact time. The response recorded was the decolorization efficiency. The study employed the use of 2k full factorial design and one-way analysis of variance to analyze the effect of the parameters and their interactions. The adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, the interaction between adsorbent dosage and pH, the interaction between pH and contact time, and the interaction among adsorbent dosage, pH and contact time were found to be significant. The highest decolorization efficiency of 77.22 ± 0.16 % was obtained at adsorbent dosage of 6 g/L, pH of 5, and contact time of 120 minutes. An isotherm study was conducted and best fitted the Freundlich isotherm model which gave an R2 value of 0.9961.
