The PhD by research program provides chemical engineers a greater opportunity for improving or developing further their capabilities in providing quality instruction and in undertaking research and development projects. After completing the program, the student should be able to:
- can generate an original research that would provide strategic, practical, socially-relevant and innovative solutions for complex, real world problems through utilization of advanced knowledge and skills in the field of Chemical Engineering ; and
- can effectively communicate research outputs, through highly-cited refereed publications and technical presentations, that could serve as relevant inputs to further research (basic or applied), policy making, or development of a technology for a potential enterprise.
Admission requirements
To qualify for admission to the PhD by Research in Chemical Engineering, the applicant:
- must be a holder of Bachelor of Science (BS) Chemical Engineering degree or its equivalent*, and Master of Science (MS) degree in Chemical Engineering or related fields* from a recognized institution;
- for non-BS Chemical Engineering graduates, must have earned at least 30 units of core courses in BS Chemical Engineering, and MS degree in Chemical Engineering or related fields from a recognized institution;
- for non-MS Chemical Engineering graduates, must have earned at least 12 units of core courses in MS Chemical Engineering;
- have a GWA of 1.75 or better in the MS degree;
- have at least three (3) years of relevant experience in research certified by his/her Agency;
- have at least one (1) refereed publication, lead, senior or sole author, in a reputable journal within the last five (5) years; and
- must undergo and pass the assessment process conducted by the evaluation committee of relevant academic unit.
*equivalent degrees or related fields may refer to such degree programs as Environmental Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Engineering; Material Science and Engineering, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Fermentation Technology, Biotechnology, Biological & Agricultural Engineering, etc. subject to the evaluation of the evaluation committee based on their curricular content.

Graduation Requirements
Graduation from the PhD by Research in Chemical Engineering program shall require the following University requirements:
- Completion of three (3) – one (1) unit graduate seminar courses for a total credit of 3 units;
- Passing of the final examination (dissertation defense) in a public colloquium;
- Satisfaction of the external review;
- Submission of the dissertation manuscript; and
- Submission of three (3) articles published (or at least accepted for publication) in a refereed journal based on the dissertation.
