The UP Los Baños (UPLB) Department of Chemical Engineering, through the project leadership of Asst. Prof. Maria Victoria M. Sumagang, has invited Professor Dominic C. Y. Foo from the University of Nottingham Malaysia to conduct a series of seminars on research careers, publication, and carbon footprint reduction. The seminars were held last May 22 to 24, 2024 in two campuses of the University of the Philippines. Dr. Foo’s visit was made possible through funds obtained from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD). The seminars comply with UPLB’s call for Accelerating Growth through One Research & Extension in Action (AGORA) under the Resilience and Sustainability focus area.
Professor Ir. Dominic Chwan Yee Foo, PhD, FASc, FIChemE, FIEM, FHEA, Peng, CEng, ACPE is the Director of the Centre of Excellence for Green Technologies and the Head of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering in the University of Nottingham Malaysia, and a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers UK. Dr. Foo belongs to the Top 2% Scientist based on Stanford/Elsevier’s rankings. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief in the journal “Process Integration and Optimization” in Springer Nature, a Subject Editor in the journal “Process Safety & Environmental Protection” in Elsevier and an Editorial Board Member in several renowned journals in the field of chemical engineering.
His first seminar entitled “Seminar on Publication – from an Editor’s Perspective” was held last May 22, 2024, at the Maynilad Room, Melchor Hall, College of Engineering in UP Diliman, and was made possible in collaboration with the UP Diliman Department of Chemical Engineering. In his talk, Dr. Foo gave insights about publications to undergraduate and graduate students of UP Diliman based on his perspective as an editor of several journals. He provided the different means of publications, the reasons why career aspirants in academia need publications, and the process on how scientific efforts are published in major scientific journals.
His second seminar entitled “Seminar on Research Career & Publication) was held last May 23, 2024, at the Institute of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (IABE) Conference Room in UPLB. Throughout the day-long seminar, he provided insights on the seven keys to be a successful international researcher, how publications pave the way for career progression in academia, and his insights on the process of publication as an editor. This seminar was attended by undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and research staff of UPLB.
His third seminar entitled “Seminar on Carbon Footprint Reduction for the Manufacturing Industry” was held last May 24, 2024, at the IABE Conference Room in UPLB. This seminar was co-organized with the UPLB Interdisciplinary Life Cycle Assessment Laboratory (ILCAL). In his talk, he focused on the various carbon emissions of manufacturing industries which contribute to global warming and climate change. Dr. Foo engaged participating manufacturing industry professionals, and faculty and research staff of UPLB to join efforts toward reducing carbon footprint and achieving net zero emissions. He also held a simple workshop on quantifying carbon emissions and other technical analyses including action plans that will lead toward carbon footprint reduction.
