The adsorption of methylene blue, a basic synthetic dye, using activated carbon (AC) derived from calamansi peels was investigated in this study. Parametric study using 2ᵏ factorial experimental design was done to determine the significance of the main and interaction effects of various factors to the response, percent removal efficiency of methylene blue. The factors considered in the study were initial pH, adsorbent dose and initial concentration. Based on the results, only two of the main effects were significant which are pH level and adsorbent dose, exhibiting positive relationship with the response. The highest removal efficiency recorded was at 92.9781 % with experimental conditions of pH 9, 0.05 adsorbent dose and 15 ppm initial concentration. Kinetic study was also done for the adsorption process indicating a pseudo-second order of reaction with R² of 0.8702 and kinetic constant of 6.6150 x 10⁻⁵ g-mg⁻¹-min⁻¹. This implies that the adsorption process follows a chemisorption type of mechanism. Isotherm studies were also done which showed Freundlich isotherm as the best fitted isotherm having R² of 0.9726, K? of 0339 L/g and n of 2.2821. Freundlich isotherm suggests that the adsorption mechanism is multilayer. The K? value obtained signifies adsorption capacity which is relatively high while n value which is greater than 1 indicates that the adsorption is not favorable at high concentrations.
