Abstract
Textile industry is one of the major sources of colored effluents disposed on water bodies which cause damage to the aquatic environment. The batch adsorption of aqueous malachite green using synthesized aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) formed on aluminum sheets was done to determine its effectiveness in textile wastewater treatment. SEM and FT-IR analyses were used to characterize the Al₂O₃ obtained. The parameters studied consisted of initial wastewater concentration, initial pH, and presence of UV light source with an equilibrium time of 4h. A 2ᵏ full factorial experimental design was used. The amount MG adsorbed per gram adsorbent (qₑ) was found to be increasing at increasing concentration. A different trend was observed on the effect of initial pH which resulted on a decrease for higher initial pH. The presence of UV light source has no significant effect on the adsorption process. Highest qₑ was observed at parameter conditions of 40 ppm and pH 4 having 0.3710 mg/g and 0.3889 mg/g for dark setup and 40-watt UV source, respectively. Two kinetic models were selected to describe the adsorption process. The standard deviation to the mean of the experimental qₑ were 0.0344 and 0.3195 for the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order, respectively. It can be concluded from the standard deviations that the pseudo-first order was the followed mechanism and an initial diffusion process followed by surface compound formation describes the adsorption process. Three factors including initial pH, initial wastewater concentration, and the interaction of the two have significant effects on the adsorption system.
