Abstract
Activated carbon from coconut shell was used to remove iron and manganese from aqueous solution. The biochar was first produced by carbonizing it in a furnace at 500oC and was activated by heating at 600oC after impregnation with sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The biochar yield was 55.81% and the activated carbon yield was 76.43%. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to study the effects of contact time, initial metal concentration and adsorbent loading on the removal of iron and manganese in single and binary systems. The time used in the adsorption studies was 150 minutes since the experimental equilibrium ime for the removal of iron was 75 minutes and 110 minutes for the removal of manganese. Different adsorbent loading was used to remove iron and manganese in 30 mL solutions of single and binary systems of iron and manganese. All factors and their interactions were found to be significant for both single and binary systems of iron and manganese. It was found out that pseudo-first order is more applicable than pseudo-second order model in defining the adsorption of both iron and manganese on the CSAC. Using the Webber-Morris internal particle diffusion model, it was found out that film diffusion is also present in the adsorption process. Langmuir isotherm is better in fitting the adsorption of manganese and Freundlich isotherm for the adsorption of iron. The calculated adsorption capacity of CSAC for the removal of iron was 4.33 mg/g and 8.33 mg/g for manganese.
