Abstract

Pittosporum resiniferum Hemsl, also known as petroleum nut, has the potential to provide essential oils which can be used for medicinal and other purposes. The oil of dried and milled petroleum nut was obtained using solvent extraction thru flask experiments. The factors considered were solvent to solvent ratio (isopropanol:hexane ratio) of 1:1 and 5:1, solvent-nut ratio of 2:1 and 6:1, and agitation time of 30 min and 120 min. Effects of the abovementioned parameters on oil yield were evaluated using a 2ᵏ factorial experimental design. From the analysis, the significant parameters on oil yield were the individual effect of solvent-nut ratio (A), and the interaction of solvent-nut ratio with isopropanol-hexane ratio (AB). The parameters that gave the highest oil yield (13.218%) were 2:1 solvent-nut ratio, 1:1 isopropanol-hexane ratio, and 120 min agitation time. Soxhlet extraction was compared with the solvent extraction thru flasks with conditions of 180 mL solvent to 3.5 g nut ratio, 1:1 isopropanol-hexane ratio, and 20 hours extraction time. The oil yield from the Soxhlet extraction was 17.720%, with percent recovery of 74.594% from the oil yield of the flask experiments. The experimental design model was found to be significant with p-value of 0.0271, therefore, the results can be used as a guide for optimization and scale up studies.
