Abstract

Pig manure was used as substrate in gallon-sized biodigester with carabao rumen as inoculum. The effects of intermittent aeration rates (0, 5, 10, and 15 minutes) on methane emissions were determined. An aquarium pump was used to supply 52.8 mL/min of air to the digester. The anaerobic setup produced the largest volume of methane and carbon dioxide. One-way analysis of variance of the total amounts of methane and carbon dioxide generated from the aerated digesters did not show any significant difference. Aerating the tank for 5, 10, and 15 minutes every 12 hours can reduce the methane generation by 85.57%, 88.92%, and 87.24%, respectively. In addition, carbon dioxide emission was also reduced by 75.19%, 72.17%, and 69.80%, respectively. Scaling up to 750 gallon residential septic tank, the cost of electricity for the five minute aeration is 68.29 pesos per month.
