Abstract

The effect of different treatments of aluminum on its ability to adsorb oxytetracycline (OTC) was studied. Treatments considered include heating (T1), acid washing (T2), and annealing (T3). Results from one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s method, and T-test indicated that at T2 (100 °C, 30 mins) and T3 (200 °C, 3 hrs) conditions used, they were not significantly different from each other. Mean removal of OTC using negative control (no adsorption, C-) increased by 98.29% when untreated aluminum was added (positive control, C+). T1, T2, and T3 increased the mean adsorptive uptake of aluminum foil by 51.81%, 71.51%, and 74.97%, respectively, compared to C+. The increased activation temperature, holding time, and cleaning improved adsorption capability of aluminum foil significantly. Removal efficiency and adsorptive uptake were both increased with time in the following order of treatments: T1, T2, and T3. After 160 mins, the removal efficiency of T1, T2, and T3 were 23.05%, 35.03%, and 41.74%, respectively. The adsorptive uptake of aluminum foil after 160 mins using T1, T2, and T3 were 1.624 mg/g, 2.464 mg/g, and 2.953 mg/g, respectively. Using three-point differential method, the orders of reaction, n, of T1, T2 and, T3 were 13.59, 10.54, and 4.67, respectively. The rate constants, k, of T1, T2, and T3 were 2.85E-20, 1.52E-15, and 5.59E-8, respectively. Among the considered treatments, annealing (T3) enhanced the adsorptive capability of aluminum foil the most.
