The effects of acid concentration, microwave power level and irradiation time on glucose concentration produced from dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis were determined using 23 factorial design. It was found out that only microwave power level had significant effect. For the two-factor interaction, only the combined effect of microwave power level and acid concentration had a significant effect. The best combination of parameters was: 0.2 N sulfuric acid, high microwave power level and 10 minutes irradiation time. The highest glucose concentration produced under the best combination of parameter was 0.195 mg/ml. The low result relative to microwave- assisted and conventional dilute acid hydrolysis suggested that cellulose was hardly hydrolyzed due to presence of lignin and hemicellulose. Delignification prior to microwave-assisted acid hydrolysis suggested to increase the yield. The kinetic constant for formation of glucose equal to 0.004 minute⁻¹ following pseudo-first order homogenous catalyzed reaction model also supported the low yield.
