Parametric Study on Solvent Extraction of Oil From Petroleum Nut (Pittosporum resiniferum Hemsl.) using Ethanol as Solvent

The oil of the dried and milled petroleum nuts was extracted by soaking it with the solvent, absolute ethanol, at a specific temperature (40°C, 60°C), solvent-nut ratio (2:1, 5:1) and soaking time (8, 16 hrs). Effects of the previously stated parameters on the percent oil yield was then evaluated using statistical analysis. The researcher was able to observe positive significant effects of the temperature, solvent-nut ratio, interactions between all parameters, the temperature and solvent-nut ratio, and temperature and soaking time. The individual effect of the soaking time as well as its interaction with solvent-nut ratio was insignificant. The lowest oil yield, 10.12% was obtained from the parameter combination 40°C, 5:1, 16 hrs, while the highest yield, 12.70% was obtained from the parameter combination 60°C, 1:5, at 16 hrs. Extraction of oil using fresh petroleum nuts were done using the high and low value parameter combinations which yielded up to 9.70% of oil, which is lower than the yield from the dried nut due to the difference in moisture content. The Soxhlet oil extraction done at 200°C, 1:18 solvent ratio and 20.23 hours, in duplicate had an average oil yield of 35.08%. The results from soaking method when compared to the Soxhlet extraction had a percent difference of 41.52%.
