Wastewater from distilleries contains melanoidin, which is a product of Maillard reaction. Melanoidin has dark color, which is hazardous to receiving ecosystems if not treated. The feasibility of using bagasse fly ash (BFA) as an alternative low cost adsorbent was investigated. Factorial experiments (2k) were done to evaluate the effects of adsorbent dosage, initial pH, contact time, and temperature and the interactions among these factors on the adsorption efficiency of BFA adsorbent. Maximum adsorption of 12.01 % was obtained at high values of 33.33 mg/mL adsorbent dosage, 40 °C, 60 minutes and initial pH of 5.0. Adsorbent dosage and contact time significantly increased the percent adsorption while pH significantly decreased the percent adsorption. Two-way interactions that significantly decreased the percent adsorption were adsorbent load and temperature, adsorbent load and initial pH, and initial pH and temperature. Three-way interactions that significantly decreased the percent adsorption were adsorbent load, initial pH, and temperature and time, initial pH and temperature. Data obtained were found to best fit Langmuir Type II Isotherm (with R2=0.989) which means adsorption is monolayer and homogenous.
