The UPLB Chemical Engineering Quiz Team bagged 2nd Runner Up in the 45th Inter-University Chemical Engineering Quiz Show (INTER-U), a sub-event of the Students’ National Chemical Engineering Conference (SNCEC) 2023, organized by the UP Chemical Engineering Society Inc., commonly known as UP KEM. This year’s INTER-U was held last January 21, 2024, at the MERALCO Multimedia Lecture Hall, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Building, UP Diliman, Quezon City, and was participated by 10 teams from 6 universities and colleges nationwide. Two teams represented UPLB, dubbed Team A and Team B, during the said event.

Myrckho Miguell Mendoza (Coach), Matthew Felimon Caisip, Angelo Sarmiento, Cedrick Cecil Duazo, John Norbert Capacio, Bernadette Gail Maningas, Merel Ann Belleza, John Noel Macorol, Seamus Alaric Mascareñas, Mark Joseph Ramon, Engr. Ruen Rey Sazon (Coach), Asst. Prof. Mart Merwin C. Magboo (Coach)

The competition had three phases (Elimination, Wildcard, and Final Phase), each phase composed of questions coming from various subjects in the chemical engineering curriculum, namely Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Science, and Chemical Engineering, including General Knowledge. Both UPLB teams were able to secure a slot in the Final Phase after coursing through the Elimination and Wildcard Phases.

After the Final Phase, UPLB Team A (Team Captain: John Norbert Capacio, Members: Cedrick Cecil Duazo, Matthew Felimon Caisip, and Bernadette Gail Maningas) was awarded 2nd Runner Up, equivalently finishing Third place overall. UPLB Team B (Team Captain: Angelo Sarmiento, Members: John Noel Macorol, Merel Ann Belleza, Mark Joseph Ramos) finished 4th overall in the scoreboard. The event was also attended by Faculty Coaches of the UPLB Chemical Engineering Quiz Team: Engr. Myrckho Miguell A. Mendoza, Engr. Ruen Rey Sazon, and Asst. Prof. Mart Merwin C. Magboo. Meanwhile, the two teams from De La Salle University Manila bagged the 1st Runner Up and the Championship titles in this year’s competition.

At the end of the day, the spirit of camaraderie and good sportsmanship among chemical engineering students across participating universities and colleges prevailed, and that showcasing their intellectual prowess in chemical engineering on a national platform makes all of them winners.
