Despite the strong typhoon “Quinta,” which hit the country last October 26, 2020, the ASEAN University Network Quality Assessment (AUN-QA) was kickstarted with an opening program held via Zoom. The ASEAN University Network (AUN) promotes quality assurance in higher education institutions of the ASEAN region. AUN evaluates participating institutions to ensure that they are at par with the international standards and that these institutions produce robust, industry-ready graduates.

With the belief that knowing spells the difference, the Biofuels Research Team released books, policy paper and ISI-based journal articles that provide handy reference to policy makers and industry players. The biofuels books entitled The Philippine Biofuels Industry: Defining the Strategic Directions published in 2015 and Sweet Sorghum as Feedstock: A Milestone for Bioethanol Fuel published in 2018, are culmination of series of studies on the production of biofuels from different feedstock sources. The books are products of joint effort between the university and the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research.

The fifteenth of August year 2020 will be known in history as the date of the first UPLB “Virtual” Commencement Exercises. Sixty-one graduates for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering were announced during two events, 48th UPLB “Virtual” Commencement Exercises and the CEAT Virtual Testimonial Program 2020. Dr. Monet Concepcion Maguyon-Detras, department chair, delivered a short message to the graduates noting that this batch of graduates is unique, “this batch will always be remembered as the one who emerged victorious amidst the challenges to learning brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
